Sabertec, Developers of Tailpipe Emissions Reduction Device "Blade," Invited to Speak at National Press Club's Prestigious "Newsmaker" Series in Washington, D.C.

Panel on Addressing America's Air Quality Crisis includes President of Clean Air Watch, Frank O'Donnell, "A Civil Action" plaintiff attorney, Jan R. Schlichtmann and Sabertec CEO, William J. O'Brien

Washington, DC (PRWEB) December 20, 2008 -- Sabertec, an emerging environmental technology company and makers of Blade, a device designed to reduce CO2 emissions and toxic particulate matter (PM) from automotive tailpipes, took part in the prestigious National Press Club "Newsmaker" series, joining other experts in a press conference on Tuesday, December 9th, 2008, entitled, "Addressing America's Air Quality Crisis by Reducing Tailpipe Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Air Pollution."

William J. O'Brien, CEO of Sabertec, offered an in-depth look at personal vehicle reduction technologies, including proven benefits shown in rigorous laboratory testing. He also provided specific insight on the potential environmental impact of widespread adoption of these technologies. He was joined by one of America's foremost authorities on air-quality issues, Frank O'Donnell, President of Clean Air Watch and renowned plaintiff attorney, Jan R. Schlichtmann.

The influential forum is offered by the National Press Club to provide a special venue for business leaders, diplomats and officials, including many visiting foreign diplomats and heads of state or government. The series is a way for the nation's top media to access decision-makers from a very broad spectrum of public life.

The event took place just one day before Sabertec announced results from independent laboratory testing that confirmed that Blade is the nation's first aftermarket automotive technology to pass EPA guidelines for increased fuel economy, while dramatically reducing CO2 emissions.

"Our nation's air quality is causing grave effects on the health of our planet and our families. We can't afford to wait for regulation or community action to solve this problem," said O'Brien. "Entrepreneurs must be the force of change today. By bringing innovations like Blade to market, the private sector can mobilize individuals with powerful health, environmental and financial benefits."

Schlichtmann, made famous by the book and movie "A Civil Action," offered a sobering judgment of the legal system's role in bringing about change from auto manufacturers and other companies in addressing the air quality problem.

"This isn't about finding someone to blame. It's about companies, government and communities finally admitting that there is, in fact, a huge problem," said Schlichtmann. "The answer isn't lawsuits and fighting, it's individual action."

Panelists also analyzed America's resistance to embracing global emissions reductions standards, such as the Kyoto Protocol and the European Emissions Standards, and provided thoughts on what we may expect from the Obama administration, including vehicle emissions regulations and enforcement of the Clean Air Act.

"The Obama administration will take a different approach to the debate about the environment," Schlichtmann said. He forecasted a cease-fire in disputes over science, which will build momentum to solve problems. "That alone will have a huge impact," he said. "The more discussion, the more honesty, the less need there is to fight."

O'Brien said that it would take 15 to 20 years for new environmental technology to have full impact, if only installed on new vehicles. Along the way, the government must provide incentives in the form of tax breaks for existing vehicles, which are likely to stay on the road for seven to 10 years. But the best environmental answer in the long run is to eliminate pollution-producing cars.
