New Finasteride Treatment Helps Balding Men 'in Recession'

Dr. Alan Bauman is first in U.S. to compound finasteride off premises through an FDA-licensed and registered pharmacy.

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) August 6, 2008 -- Here's one sign of an economic recession you probably haven't heard of: expect to see more receding hairlines and balding men.

Dr. Alan Bauman calls it the "Propecia Index" - as more consumers struggle with job loss and insecurity, rising costs and a bleak economic forecast, some are cutting back on less critical expenses - like Propecia, Rogaine and other elective medications. At his hair restoration clinic in Boca Raton, Fla., where he direct-dispenses roughly 100,000 tablets of FDA-approved Propecia annually to his patients, Dr. Bauman has seen more patients skipping their Propecia - over the last year, requests for refills were down 15-percent.

To help patients maintain a consistent standard of care during a tough economy, while waiting for Generic Propecia's expected availability in 2012, Dr. Bauman recently struck a deal with MasterPharm (www.masterpharm.com), a highly-regarded FDA-licensed and registered New York compounding pharmacy, to become the first doctor in the U.S. to custom-compound finasteride (the active ingredient in the drug Propecia) off premises as a less expensive, 'off-label' alternative for his patients.

Not a "Generic Propecia," the specially compounded, quality-controlled finasteride will:

• Cost about 30-percent less ($155/90 days) than Merck's Propecia (~$233 for the same amount)

• Allow for a customized dosage based on the patient's individual needs. This dosage could be lower or higher than Merck's standard 1mg dosage, according to Dr Bauman's prescriptions.

• In the future, compounded finasteride prescriptions may also contain other beneficial bioactive nutritionals or herbs depending on the patient's needs, potentially resulting in further cost-savings for Dr. Bauman's patients already on those treatments.

• "Off-label" compounded minoxidil (i.e., Rogaine) is also being prescribed by Dr. Bauman at customized/higher concentrations and with retinoic acid, which is believed to accelerate scalp absorption of the topical treatment.

About 60 years ago, more than half of all prescribed medications were compounded - today, that number is closer to 1-percent. But with strong economic pressures, a high demand for cosmetic treatments and the patient-benefits of custom dosing, Dr. Bauman thinks the trend will reverse--with more physicians working with compounding pharmacists to offer tailor-made prescriptions, customized for their patients' individual needs. In the few weeks since the Compounded Finasteride became available, Bauman patients have already realized a total cost savings of over $16,224.00. As of this month, over 70-percent of Dr. Bauman's Propecia patients have switched to compounded finasteride.
