High-Altitude Mountaineers Use All Natural Sunscreen During Himalayan Ascent

Over the next two weeks, a Swiss Expedition with Hansruedi Wirth and a team of 7 high-altitude mountaineers will climb 23,212 ft. high Mt. Satopanth in the Indian Himalayas. In order to prevent serious skin damage to their face, lips and hands as they ascend to the summit, the entire team has chosen to use MelanSol All Natural Antioxidant Sunscreen SPF-25. A radically different antioxidant rich sunscreen formula that is biodegradable.

Panama City Beach, Florida (PRWEB) September 20, 2008 -- Over the next two weeks, a Swiss Expedition with Hansruedi Wirth and a team of 7 high-altitude mountaineers will climb 23,212 ft. high Mt. Satopanth in the Indian Himalayas, very near the border triangle of India, Nepal and Tibet. Because avoiding serious skin damage at this high altitude is an absolute necessity, the entire team has chosen to be outfitted with MelanSol®, the same radically new all natural sunscreen Hansruedi Wirth and the majority of his team used during their 2006 high-altitude climb of 24,688 ft. Annapurna IV, in the Himalayas of Nepal.

The team members include 2 Austrians, 1 German and 5 Swiss. There are three women on the team, one of which is a medical doctor. The support group includes three climbing Sherpa's and several carrier Sherpa's with logistical functions like carrying equipment and cooking.

Each team member and Sherpa will be equipped with a 2 oz. bottle of MelanSol® SPF-25 all natural antioxidant sunscreen. "During my last expedition, we used MelanSol® SPF-18," said Wirth. "It protected our face, lips, and hands above 19,000 ft. elevation better than any sunscreen we have ever used. Personally, I very much like that it is all natural."

The scheduled itinerary has the team covering 10 days of ascent once they reach Gangotory pilgrimage, their base camp at 9993 ft. elevation. They will spend the next 9 days ascending through three more camps until they reach a lengthy summit ridge at 23,211 ft. elevation, with 30 degrees of slope on both sides of the summit of Mt. Satopanth. They may establish a final camp at the beginning of this narrow ridge before attempting an ascent to the summit. They will make their full ascent without oxygen, although each will have a small bottle in case of an emergency.

When asked about his passion for high altitude climbing, Wirth said, "I am fascinated with the challenge of high-altitude mountaineering because it tests my physical and mental limits."
