Digital Healthcare's Retasure now available to over 60,000 diabetic patients

Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in retinal risk assessment for diabetics, announced today that over 60,000 diabetic patients have access to Retasure assessments through their primary care physicians and endocrinologists. Additionally, over 25% of patients receiving Retasure assessments have been found to have previously undetected eye disease.

Wake Forest, NC (PRWEB) February 28, 2008 -- Digital Healthcare, a Wake Forest, NC company specializing in retinal risk assessment for diabetics, announced today that over 60,000 diabetic patients have access to Retasure assessments through their primary care physicians and endocrinologists. Additionally, over 25% of patients receiving Retasure assessments have been found to have previously undetected eye disease.

"This is a major milestone for Retasure, especially since our first US installation was just seven months ago," said Marc Winchester, President for Digital Healthcare's North American Operations. "Our services are now available to a large number of patients and the results prove that we are impacting vision health."

Since the first Retasure installation in July, 2007, the number of physicians and patients served has doubled every ninety days. "The overwhelming response in the medical community indicates that primary care doctors and endocrinologists place a high value on diabetic retinal risk assessments," said Winchester. "The fact that Retasure is non-invasive and easy to use technology has enabled physicians to quickly adopt the solution for their diabetic patients."

"Earlier detection of patients with diabetic eye disease by endocrinologists and primary care physicians means earlier referral to an ophthalmologist," said Dr. Suber S. Huang, Digital Healthcare's Medical Director for Ophthalmology. "It is difficult to understate the public health impact and cost to society of undetected diabetic eye disease. Retasure is making a difference in our efforts for earlier diagnosis and treatment of complications, and this truly helps reduce the incident of permanent vision loss."

The FDA-approved Retasure program provides a simple, affordable, and non-invasive solution that allows physicians to capture their patients' retinal images during a three to five minute procedure. Images are transmitted over a secure, HIPAA compliant network to an accredited reading center. A state-licensed and board certified ophthalmologist reviews the images and results are returned to the original physician within 72 hours.

There are an estimated 20 million diabetic patients in the US, but only about half have any retinal assessments, despite a high risk of diabetic retinopathy. The National Eye Institute indicates diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working age American adults. More than a million patients around the world have received a retinal risk assessment using Digital Healthcare software.
