One of the largest local sponsors and the official healthcare provider of the AMA Houston Supercross, Dr. Sanders helps athletes set the pace in 2008

Houston, TX (PRWEB) January 21, 2008 -- Sought by action sports athletes from across the nation, Dr. Mark Sanders is commonly called the "motocross doc" -- particularly as the AMA Supercross ramps up. Specializing in sports medicine, the orthopedic surgeon is among the largest local sponsors and the official healthcare provider for the Houston Supercross. He and his staff spend the weekend helping riders understand how to avoid some of the most common motocross injuries they treat.

Dr. Sanders of Sanders Clinic for Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at River Oaks Medical Tower (formerly Twelve Oaks Medical Center) has treated thousands of both professional and amateur motocross and BMX riders. As a rider himself, he understands the drive athletes have to get back to their sport and tailors their treatment and rehabilitation accordingly.

Recently named Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Surgery Specialty Hospitals of America in Pasadena, Dr. Sanders has earned a reputation as Houston's leading action sports doctors -- helping return athletes from across the United States back to their sport faster with his advanced ACL and shoulder procedures and accelerated rehabilitation programs. By refining traditional methods and utilizing an innovative approach, he is able to shave months off of standard recovery times and yield strong long-term results.

As the AMA Supercross sweeps across the nation, the board certified physician and his staff spotlight the most common injuries for which riders seek treatment during this time of year; shoulder instability, acromioclavicular (AC) joint separation and collarbone fractures, ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears and distal radius fractures.

"Understanding the areas most vulnerable in this sport helps riders hone their strengthening and training programs accordingly," said Sanders Clinic certified trainer Ed Nepveux.

According to Nepveux, a program that entails the balanced strengthening of opposing muscle groups gives athletes the greatest advantage -- avoiding injuries that result from the disproportionate strength of muscle groups key in the support of a limb, such as the biceps and triceps of the upper arm and quadriceps and hamstrings of the upper leg.

"Education is a big part of what we do. It can really help athletes avoid unnecessary injuries," said Dr. Sanders.

"When injuries do occur, treatment for an athlete who will return to his sport is different than that of a non athlete, as their injured limbs and joints will return to the same rigorous activities and need to be adequately prepared for that," said Dr. Sanders.

Dr. Sanders and the Sanders Clinic team will have a tent in the pit area of Reliant Stadium during the February 16 Supercross event and feature posters explaining the most common MX injuries. They will be on hand throughout the weekend to answer questions and address concerns.

Dr. Sanders was listed among H Texas Magazine's Top Docs two years in a row and among Health & Fitness magazine's Phenomenal Physicians for 2006-07. He is featured in the Medicine Men of Texas book of exemplary medical professionals and serves as a health and fitness contributor to BMX Today magazine, Transworld Motocross online and a number of both local and national motocross website health and fitness forums.
