The Doctors Company Launches Litigation Education Retreats to Assist Physicians Involved in Medical Litigation

As part of its commitment to providing the industry's most aggressive defense, The Doctors Company, the largest national insurer of physician and surgeon medical liability in the U.S., is rolling out litigation education retreats for member physicians who are in the process of medical litigation.

Napa, Calif. (Vocus) October 27, 2008 -- As part of its commitment to providing the industry's most aggressive defense, The Doctors Company (www.thedoctors.com), the largest national insurer of physician and surgeon medical liability in the U.S., is rolling out litigation education retreats for member physicians who are in the process of medical litigation.

Member physicians will learn constructive ways to cope with malpractice stress, understand the legal process, and prepare testimony from a strategic perspective during the litigation education retreats. Physicians will also receive psychological support, an explanation of the litigation process, help with testimony preparation, and mock deposition practice with top industry experts.

"The Doctors Company (www.thedoctors.com) is relentlessly committed to protecting and defending its member physicians and to providing innovative programs such as the litigation education retreats. Our experience has proven that including the physician as an active participant throughout the litigation process is not only beneficial in mounting the most effective defense, but it may also help the physician in dealing with the emotional aspects of a claim," said Paula Jenkins, senior vice president of Claims for The Doctors Company.

The Doctors Company launches the program with eight litigation education retreats taking place across the country, including retreats in California, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Virginia and Washington, at no cost to member physicians. Spouses are also encouraged to attend as they play an important support role throughout the litigation process.

Providing the industry's most aggressive claims defense is central to The Doctors Company's mission. Based on closed claims surveys, The Doctors Company has been successful in fulfilling this mission as 92 percent of members recognize the company's success in defending them when their professionalism has been challenged. The Doctors Company's defense is so aggressive that more than 80 percent of claims brought against its members are resolved without indemnity payments. The Doctors Company is not afraid to try cases and when it does, more than 87 percent are decided in favor of its members.
