Parents: Don't Let Your Kids Get Stuck Without Shots

Back to school time and El Paso children line up to get immunized.

(PRWEB) August 6, 2007 -- As children begin to prepare to return to school, immunizations should top the priority list this summer. As immunization recommendations have changed, parents should take this time to have their shot record reviewed and get their child's vaccination record up to date. ProAction has once again partnered with area school districts to conduct a month-long sweep of area schools.

Health officials are now recommending a second dose of chicken pox vaccine, which could help them prevent contracting the highly contagious and itchy illness. Other vaccine recommendations would also include application of a new type of Tetanus vaccine with now includes a whooping cough component. Typically children over 11 can seek out the new tetanus shot.

"We are now able to vaccinate against over 14 preventable diseases -- a wonderful feat for the healthcare community. It is now our chief mission to assure that everybody is able to reap the benefits of these remarkable breakthroughs," said Dusty Warden, Outreach Coordinator for ProAction.

"By visiting as many areas as possible, we can help assure that every child has an opportunity to be immunized, allow them to enter or continue school and ultimately creating healthier communities," Warden continued.

Immunization outreach clinics will span across all parts of El Paso County. Earlier this year ProAction also expanded their clinic hours, which should also help accommodate the larger than normal crowds expected during this time of year.

Patients presenting Medicaid or CHIP will receive their immunizations at no cost, otherwise immunizations are only $10.00 per child, regardless of the number of shots received. A list of immunization locations and times can be found at www.ImmunizeElPaso.org or by calling 915/533-3414.
