Prescription Addiction Radio Show Airs Califano Interview: The Medicine Cabinet Has Become More Dangerous than the Street Dealer

In an interview with Joseph Califano, Chairman of the Board and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University (http://www.casacolumbia.org), Mr. Califano explains how "the medicine cabinet has become more dangerous than the street dealer". The interview will air on the Prescription Addiction Radio Show on WGUL 860 AM on Sunday night, March 16th (streamed live on the internet at http://www.860wgul.com ).

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) March 14, 2008 -- Joseph Califano, Chairman of the Board and President of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University (http://www.casacolumbia.org), was candid and informative in the 30-minute interview to be aired on the Prescription Addiction Radio Show on WGUL 860 AM on Sunday night, March 16th (streamed live on the internet at http://www.860wgul.com ).

During the interview, Mr. Califano discussed the fact that addiction is a disease, not a moral failing and how difficult it is for family members to talk about the problem. He stressed the fact that people need to recognize that many prescription drugs are addictive and highly abused, stating that "the medicine cabinet has become more dangerous than the street dealer".

Illustrating the massive increase in prescription drug addiction in the US, Mr. Califano pointed out that "in a 10-year period, 1992 to 2002, prescriptions written for controlled drugs increased more than 150 percent, almost 12 times the rate of increase in population and almost three times the rate of increase in prescriptions written for all other drugs".

"If there would be asbestos in their local school, the parents would raise hell - and when parents feel as strongly about the infestation of drugs into their schools as they do asbestos, the situation will change" claims Califano.

Califano warns, "Teens think prescription drugs are safer because parents have not been responsible enough in educating their children on the possible dangers of the prescription drugs" and comments "Over a generation ago parents locked the liquor cabinet, why not the medicine cabinet?"

Larry G, host of the Prescription Addiction Radio Show, and Mr. Califano also discussed the Citizen Petition to the FDA by CASA. Larry G asked the question if Remoxy, another oxycodone product, will be released by the FDA without any public comment. Listeners will want to take note on how to follow up on this.

The Prescription Addiction radio show is the only radio show in America that discusses the silent prescription drug epidemic that is affecting families and loved ones and can be heard Sunday nights, 9-10 pm Eastern Time on WGUL 860 AM, Tampa, Florida, and streamed live on the internet at www.860wgul.com.
