Bipolar Central Founder Commemorates Bipolar Awareness Day

David Oliver, the founder of Bipolar Central, is available for print and radio interviews before, during and after Bipolar Awareness Day.

Stanhope, NJ (PRWEB) October 11, 2007 -- David Oliver, the founder and president of Bipolar Central, will be available for print and radio interviews leading up to and following Bipolar Awareness Day. The commemoration will be held on October 11, 2007 throughout the country. Oliver's goal is to increase public understanding of bipolar disorder, a mental illness that is currently affecting nearly 4.4 percent of all Americans.

Bipolar Awareness Day is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, which is held every year in October. Congress established Mental Illness Awareness Week in 1990 to recognize the alliance's efforts to raise awareness of mental illnesses.

"Most people have either a friend or family member with bipolar disorder, whether they realize it or not," said Oliver.

"Bipolar Awareness Day is a great opportunity to educate the public on an often misunderstood disorder; so that individuals can more effectively support their loved ones or get the treatment they need themselves."

Over the past 16 years, Mental Illness Awareness Week has become a tradition of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It presents an opportunity for all three levels of the alliance, national, state, and local, to work together in communities across the country through a variety of outreach, educational and advocacy efforts.

Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day was created by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Abbott Laboratories to increase awareness of bipolar disorder, and to promote the impact of early detection on the 2.3 million Americans presently affected by the disorder.
