Barlow Respiratory Hospital Receives $500,000 QueensCare Grant for Life-Saving Patient Care

City of Los Angeles residents who are in need of critical pulmonary rehabilitation services but can't afford them now have new hope. Barlow Respiratory Hospital has been awarded a $500,000 grant from QueensCare, allowing the hospital to provide life-saving respiratory and critical care services to patients without the means to pay for them.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 3, 2007 -- City of Los Angeles residents who are in need of critical pulmonary rehabilitation services but can't afford them now have new hope. Barlow Respiratory Hospital has been awarded a $500,000 grant from QueensCare, allowing the hospital to provide life-saving respiratory and critical care services to patients without the means to pay for them.

QueensCare approved the $500,000 grant to Barlow Respiratory Hospital in June of this year, and the special program is now underway. To date, two patients have been admitted through the program.

"We are very grateful to QueensCare for the opportunity to deliver our expert care and services to local residents who may not otherwise afford it," said Barlow CEO Margaret Crane. "Caring for our community is very important, and it is through such generous support that we can deliver highly specialized long-term, acute care to those in need."

In operation since 1902, the not-for-profit Barlow Respiratory Hospital serves patients with respiratory and other critical illnesses. Barlow is nationally known for its patient outcomes and has a well-established pulmonary rehabilitation program, which literally gets patients back on their feet.

Barlow's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed to help patients with breathing difficulties learn new strategies for monitoring and controlling symptoms so that they can lead more active, independent lives. Patients re-learn how to breathe, walk, conserve energy, and perform other common activities, providing practical tools to navigate everyday life situations.

Patients enter Barlow's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program when they are experiencing shortness of breath that interferes with daily activities and self-care, frequent emergency room visits or hospitalizations for pulmonary problems or difficult to manage diagnoses, including COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma, among other lung diseases.

The QueensCare grant is an indigent care program that makes possible critical pulmonary rehabilitation in-patient services for Los Angeles City residents who fit the grant criteria. Barlow is working diligently to find and admit patients who meet the selection criteria to be recipients of the grant. For more information about this partnership, or if you would like to refer a patient to the program, please contact Barlow Respiratory Hospital's Foundation or Admissions department at (213) 250-4200.

Easily accessible, Barlow Respiratory Hospital's main campus is located next-door to Dodger Stadium near Downtown Los Angeles.

Barlow Respiratory Hospital - The only one of its kind on the West Coast, Barlow Respiratory Hospital is recognized as a national leader in weaning ventilator-dependent patients and for treating patients with complex medical conditions that require longer hospital stays. Celebrating more than 100 years of service in Southern California, the long-term, acute care hospital works with nearly 100 regional hospitals to provide care for the critically ill.
