According to Ingenix, its experts analyzed the recently released 2007 Medicare Provider
Analysis and Review (MedPAR) file, limiting the study to general acute hospitals with sufficient discharge volumes to support a rigorous analysis. A total of 4,607 hospitals were included in the analysis and were distributed across four peer groups:
919 Rural, Non-Teaching
1,459 Urban, Non-Teaching
1,996 Minor Teaching ( kess than 100 residents and interns)
233 Major Teaching (100-plus residents and interns)
The study included the review of more than 50 areas/indicators that point to coding excellence in the DRG and ICD09-CM systems. Of the metrics reviewed, 13 were identified as having a high correlation with coding accuracy. Hospitals were ranked within their peer groups in each of these 13 metrics and overall top performers were identified.
