Good Samaritan Hospital Receives Final New York State Approval to Begin Performing Cardiac Surgery

First surgical patient undergoes elective angioplasty in The Active International Cardiovascular Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Suffern, NY (PRWEB) January 22, 2007 -- Good Samaritan Hospital has received final New York State Department of Health approval to begin performing cardiac surgery. Following receipt of the authorization letter on Thursday, January 18, 2007, the first elective angioplasty was performed at Good Samaritan on Friday, January 19. Physicians at the hospital are currently scheduling open heart procedures that are expected to commence early next week, as well as additional elective angioplasty procedures.

"This is a monumental moment for the people of the Lower Hudson Valley -- a watershed event that will forever change healthcare in our community, dramatically and positively impacting people's lives," stated Michael Schnieders, Executive Vice President and Administrator for Good Samaritan Hospital. "Until this moment in time, patients who required cardiac surgeries were forced to endure a transfer to an out-of-area hospital, creating additional issues for both the patient and his or her family. We are pleased that we are now able to provide top-of-the-line cardiac surgical care right here, at Good Samaritan Hospital."

The Active International Cardiovascular Institute is a state-of-the-art comprehensive cardiac center, and the first program of its kind in the Lower Hudson Valley. The institute offers the most advanced cardiovascular procedures, including open-heart surgery, emergency angioplasty for acute heart attack, elective angioplasty to relieve potential blockages and a wide range of additional cardiovascular procedures.

The Active International Cardiovascular Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital is the culmination of a grassroots community effort to bring cardiac surgery to the region. Significantly, patients from the Lower Hudson Valley will now be able to remain with Good Samaritan Hospital and their families for virtually all of their advanced cardiac care.

"This is the day that this entire region has long awaited; the day that changes the landscape of healthcare in the Lower Hudson Valley once and for all," commented Dr. Edward Lundy, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at The Active International Cardiovascular Institute. "This is a critical program that will enable the people of our community to have close, immediate access to the finest in cardiovascular care, right here at Good Samaritan Hospital."

The Active International Cardiovascular Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital will reflect Dr. Lundy's vision and will become one of the outstanding patient-centered surgical programs in the country while encouraging a strong research component. The Institute will now offer:

-   Open-heart surgery, including coronary artery bypass
-   Emergency angioplasty for acute heart attack
-   Elective angioplasty to relieve potential blockages
-   Valve replacement
-   Valve repair
-   Valvuloplasty
-   Permanent pacemaker implantation
-   Internal cardioverter defibrillator implantation
-   Other cardiovascular procedures.
