Aviation Style Teamwork Training Stems Tide of Dissatisfied Healthcare Workers Leaving Profession

Hospitals who train their staff like airline crews lower nurse turnover rate to 2%.

Memphis, TN (PRWEB) February 16, 2007 -- Data suggests the turnover rate in healthcare staffing has reached an astounding 20.7% for all positions. Surveys reveal 49% of all healthcare personnel have considered leaving their jobs.

The constant turnover often leads to chronic staff shortages, short tempers, long hours, fatigue, more errors, and poor care. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement estimates there are 40 to 50 patient harming incidents for every 100 patients admitted to a hospital.

To stop the avalanche of errors, some hospitals are turning to aviation-based safety programs for their facilities. By adopting the teamwork training and safety tools that have made U.S. commercial aviation so safe, hospitals have seen remarkable improvements in error reduction…and an unexpected side benefit – lower staff turnover.

Captain Steve Harden, president and co-founder of LifeWings Partners LLC (www.SaferPatients.com) the largest provider of aviation style safety programs to hospitals, was not surprised at the extra benefit. “Teams that work well together tend to stay together.”

The LifeWings program, designed by pilots, astronauts, and physicians, stresses team building and communication skills. Says Harden, “It didn’t surprise me that teams with great collaboration skills would have higher job satisfaction. Everyone enjoys being part of a good team. What did surprise me was the magnitude of the reduction in turnover.”

One hospital hired by LifeWings typically experienced turnover for their surgical nurses of 12% annually. After implementing the LifeWings system their turnover decreased to 2%.

“We estimate the hospital saved close to a million dollars in replacement costs, not to mention the better care their patients are receiving from a stable cadre of experienced nurses.”
