Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago Ranked #1 in Illinois, Among Top in U.S. for Spine Surgery

The Neurologic and Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago has been acclaimed in a new hospital quality study from HealthGrades. The hospital achieved top ratings in spine surgery, back and neck surgery, and spinal fusion.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 12, 2008 -- The Neurologic and Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago (NOHC) has been ranked No. 1 in Illinois and is among the top five percent in the country for spine surgery, according to the Tenth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America study. The HealthGrades research analyzed patient outcomes at all of the nation's hospitals over the past three years. The study also concluded that NOHC (http://www.neuro-ortho.org) is:

  • A recipient of the HealthGrades Spine Surgery Excellence Award
  • The only hospital in Illinois to receive spine surgery excellence award
  • Five-star rated for spine surgery
  • Five-star rated for back and neck surgery two years in a row
  • Five-star rated for spinal fusion

The HealthGrades study examines nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide and identifies key trends in their quality of care. HealthGrades researchers analyzed Medicare discharges from virtually every U.S. hospital between 2004 and 2006. The study compared actual performance to predicted performance for patient outcomes during that time period. "We are honored with this award of excellence in spine surgery and are delighted to be recognized for the unprecedented patient care and customer service provided by our medical staff," says Dr. Leonard Cerullo, Medical Director of NOHC. "This study confirms what was written in the March issue of Forbes magazine, that specialty hospitals like NOHC are among the top in the country for quality medical care and ultimately lower complication and mortality rates."

The Forbes article explores safety of hospitals in the U.S. and highlights a recent study funded by Medicare showing that patients are four times less likely to die after undergoing orthopedic surgery in a specialty hospital as opposed to a full-service hospital.

The brain and spinal fusion surgeries at NOHC have been acknowledged by many of Chicago's well-respected insurance companies as having the fewest complications. A similar level of excellence is seen on the orthopedics side of the hospital. The total joint program at NOHC boasts zero complications, perhaps the lowest complication rate of any hospital in the nation. As today's baby boomers continue to age yet want to stay active, NOHC continues to expand services, adding all-new developments for hip and knee patients, including customizable implants for knee replacements and hip resurfacing for patients with hip pain who want to maintain an active lifestyle.

About Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago:
The Neurologic & Orthopedic Hospital of Chicago is the country's only freestanding acute care facility dedicated exclusively to neuroscience and orthopedic services. During 2007, more than 2,000 neurosurgical and orthopedic surgeries were performed at NOHC.
