Houston Community Leaders Unite to Fight Malaria in September

Mayor Bill White declares September 17 - September 23, 2007 Nothing But Nets Week.

What:   Nothing But Nets, a grassroots campaign to prevent malaria, will host a series of events throughout the month of September, in Houston, TX as part of its national effort to raise money and awareness for malaria prevention. Malaria is a leading killer of children in Africa. The United Nations Foundation, The People of the United Methodist Church, the Office of Mayor Bill White, the Houston Dynamo, the Houston Rockets, the Houston Comets, and the World Affairs Council of Houston will co-host several events, including a Malaria Boot Camp for youth, a faith leaders breakfast for area faith and lay leaders, and a Nothing But Nets in-stadium event with the Houston Dynamo.

On September 18, 2007, Mayor Bill White will host a press conference on the steps of City Hall to announce the city-wide commitment to combating malaria. Council Member Ada Edwards will join Houston Mayor Bill White to declare September 17 - September 23, 2007 Nothing But Nets week in Houston.

Nothing But Nets In-Stadium Event with the Houston Dynamo, Robertson Stadium

The Houston Dynamo hosted a Nothing But Nets in-stadium night to bring players and fans together to fight malaria. Activities included pre-game and half-time presentations, auctions, contests, and more. This is one of many in-stadium events occurring this year as part of the MLS W.O.R.K.S. partnership with Nothing But Nets.

Nothing But Nets Malaria Boot Camp for Youth

The World Affairs Council of Houston is hosting a malaria workshop for hundreds of local high school students to educate youth about malaria prevention, Nothing But Nets, and what youth can do to raise awareness in their communities. Health experts and professional athletes will participate in the event activities.
   
Thursday, September 20, 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. CDT
Nothing But Nets Faith Leaders’ Luncheon
(St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 2019 Crawford Street, Houston, TX 77002)
   Faith leaders from the Houston area will come together to pray for children and families who suffer from malaria and discuss the current issues and threats posed by this disease. The discussion will also focus on opportunities for the faith community to get involved in Nothing But Nets.

The World Affairs Council of Houston - Building Hope for Africa Speaker Series

Nothing But Nets will participate in the Council's Building Hope for Africa speaker series. This luncheon presentation will highlight Nothing But Nets, featuring keynote speaker Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, and will focus on the current issues and threats posed by malaria as well as opportunities for various communities to get involved.
