Automatic Life Inc. Sends Serious Message to Minorities Uninsured

Organ Donation Is Automatic Life!
Organ Donation Is Automatic Life!

501 (c) 3 Nonprofit organization recommend minorities without health insurance become organ donors for survival.

Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) January 5, 2007 -- Automatic Life, Inc. (www.donateautomaticlife.org) a nonprofit organization aimed at focusing on increasing minority organ donations targeting African American and Hispanic communities. Announced today that they plan to enforce aggressive marketing efforts targeted toward minorities without health insurance. The organization urges minorities without health insurance to consider becoming organ donors to increase the chances for persons waiting for transplants. In addition, the group also stresses that socioeconomic status plays a major role in minorities being able to receive transplants when they need them.

While it may not be commonly discussed, many organ transplant centers across the United States require persons needing transplants to qualify financially. The UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) a nonprofit organization that preserves a nationwide transplant waiting list, typically matches donors and transplant centers.

"An increase in minority organ donors could have a profound effect for minorities waiting on transplants." Stated Andrea Gwyn, Automatic Life Inc Cofounder and President. "We are in a race to get more minorities to become organ donors as fast and as quickly as we can. The uninsured should receive this message as a wakeup call. More minority organ donors increase the chances for more lives saved."

According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services more than 13,500 Hispanics are on waiting lists for organ transplants accounting for 15 percent of all organ transplant wait listed patients. The waiting period for most transplants is 17-53% percent longer for Hispanics than for non-Hispanic Whites. Nearly 24,000 African Americans are on waiting lists for organ transplants accounting for 27 percent of all organ transplant wait listed patients. African Americans comprised 35 percent of the waiting lists for kidney transplants. African Americans are almost four times as likely to have end-stage renal disease than Whites, but they are less likely to be evaluated and placed on waiting lists for kidney transplants in a timely manner. Once on the list, they also tend to wait longer for a transplant.

Automatic Life, Inc. is organized as a non-profit public charity 501 (c) 3 to encourage minorities to become organ donors and to increase survival rates for minorities needing transplants. In addition, the organization is aimed at educating African American and Hispanic communities on the importance of organ donations.
