Bobby Alires, 31, of Grand Junction, Colo. was sentenced to up 12 years in prison in Mesa County Court (Case No. 07CR80) this month for felony child abuse stemming from a 2003 incident. His victim, whose name was withheld because he is a minor, has made great steps toward recovery since the incident, but LegalView.com would like to remind readers that not all shaken children are so lucky. Shaking a baby can cause death or lifelong physical and mental disabilities by literally twisting the baby's brain inside the skull, destroying irreplaceable brain tissue, breaking blood vessels and depriving the child of oxygen. Shaken Baby Syndrome is just one of many types of injuries that can lead to traumatic brain injury. According to the website of the Center for Disease Control, at least 1.4 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year. More important perhaps is that according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the two age groups most likely to suffer a brain injury are those aged zero to four and 15 to 19. This is due to a high incidence of falls and accidents in the former group and motor vehicle accidents in the latter. Elderly individuals above 75 years of age are also more likely to suffer from traumatic brain injury due to slip and fall injuries connected to the aging process and medications, according to the CDC's website.
