New da Vinci Robot Gives Surgeons an Extra Set of Hands, Patients Enhanced Surgical Care

Lifestages - Samaritan Centers For Women are leaders in the industry with the implementation of the latest in surgical technology. Now, physicians at Lifestages have been specially trained to operate using the new da Vinci® Surgical System, enabling surgeons to perform procedures with the precision, dexterity and control of traditional open surgery using only a "nickel size" incision.

Dayton, OH (PRWEB) October 1, 2008 -- In spite of the growing demand for minimally invasive procedures, hysterectomies are still often performed using large, abdominal incisions. And that can result in loss of blood, pain and scarring and longer hospital stays.

But the physicians at Lifestages - Samaritan Centers For Women have been specially trained in a new surgical technology that helps to alleviate the need for a big incision - the da Vinci® surgery. The surgery is performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, a sophisticated robotic platform, which enables surgeons to perform surgical procedures with the precision, dexterity and control of traditional open surgery using a "nickel size" incision.

Through these small incisions the robot's powerful camera and specialized "hands" are inserted, allowing the surgical team to view a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site. The surgeon, working at a bedside console, uses finely tuned controls to move the robots "hands" precisely. As the controls are manipulated, da Vinci responds in real time, translating your surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise movements of miniaturized instruments.

For patients, the benefits of da Vinci Hysterectomy may include:

· Significantly less pain

· Less blood loss

· Fewer complications

· Less risk of infection

· Less scarring due to small incisions

· Shorter recovery time

· A faster return to normal daily activities

"At Lifestages we are always looking for ways to better help our patients and provide them with the highest quality of care," said Bruce Bernie, MD, President of Lifestages. "The da Vinci robot enables us to offer the latest in surgical technology, and results in faster recovery times and less discomfort for our patients."

Lifestages will be hosting a "Community Talk" where the public can test drive the da Vinci® robot and learn more about minimally invasive procedures, including the da Vinci® surgery for hysterectomy. The event will be held at Good Samaritan North Health Center, Wednesday November 5th at 6pm. The general public is invited and encouraged to attend.
