Adoptive Mom Starts Program to Help Others Through the Russian Adoption Process
Adopting a child is an emotional, stressful journey, no matter where you adopt from. It is a fact that Russia can be one of the quickest countries to adopt from but is also the most difficult in regards to paperwork and traveling. Remembering the many children in Russian orphanages we left behind, my hope is to encourage people to worry less when adopting children from Russia by using my program. It is a monthly program set up to educate people in the adoption process and help them with financial, travel, medical and paperwork questions. In 2004, she and her husband, Dennis, along with 3 teenaged sons, embarked on a journey that would change their lives forever…the adoption of 2 orphaned children in Russia. The frustration of the endless paperwork, medical reports, unknown finances and months of waiting caused this mom to create a system to help other families consider adopting a child from Russia. Mumm states, "If you have never adopted a child then you have no idea the emotional and financial toll it takes on the family." Mumm claims she has heard people comment on her adoption with either, "I wish we could adopt a child, but we're just too afraid of the whole process" or "We'd adopt in a minute if we just had the money." The faces of the many Russian children she met in her children's orphanage still haunts her today…especially of the little 5 yr. old girl who grabbed her hand and begged her to find her a Mama in America. Since getting her children settled into family life, Mumm felt driven to try to help people see the importance of helping orphaned children. In Russia there are approximately 6 million children living in orphanages or in the streets. Orphanages get about $0.12 per child per day from their government. Most orphanages have caretakers that care about the children but are too overworked and have so little supplies it is difficult to give the children more than the bare essentials. Mumm has affiliated herself with many Adoption Professionals to help these parents have a less stressful adoption journey. There will be teleseminars with doctors, social workers, and other adoptive parents each month. Each month will cover various topics like, How to Choose an Agency, How to Do a Homestudy, Fundraising and Financial Planning, Choosing a Referral, Reading a Russian Medical Report and even learning basic Russian. Mumm loves all five of her children and knows how important it is for children to have a mom or dad to tuck them in at night, to talk to, and to care about them. She gets choked up when telling the story of her youngest son, Alex, adopted at age 5. He looked up at her one day and said, "Mama, why didn't you come and get me sooner? I was waiting and waiting for you." Mumm then knew that thousands of orphaned children wait each day for their Mama to come and get them. Now, it is her job to educate people on the adoption process and to find families to help a child in need.
