High gas prices have commuters switching from cars to alternative transportation of many kinds. Jerry Durham, co-founder of San Francisco Sport and Spine Physical Therapy, suggests a few simple steps to improve safety, prevent injuries and improve cycling skills. San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 24, 2008 -- San Francisco Sport and Spine Physical Therapy (http://www.sfphysicaltherapy.com/) is excited to announce a presentation and discussion on cycling safety and skills at the Presidio Sports Basement (http://www.sportsbasement.com) in San Francisco on July 24 at 7pm.
"With gas prices continuing to rise more people are taking to the road on 2 wheeled transportation," says Durham. "With this comes the potential for increased injuries with both accidents and poorly fitting bicycles."
Durham will discuss a few simple steps to improve safety, prevent injuries and improve cycling skills. He offers the following suggestions for improving safety and preventing injuries. "The first, and most important, step is to wear a helmet," reminds Durham. "This is simple enough, but we still see people out on the roads in commute traffic without them."
"Cycling skills is another major safety issue," he explains. "These can be easily improved by choosing a route to work that is less congested and less traveled by cars, or it can mean getting out and riding in an open area practicing stopping, starting, and quick directional changes."
In the clinic Durham often reminds even experienced cyclists that proper bike fit is very important to reduce and prevent overuse injuries. "A good bike shop is your best bet," says Durham. "They can make sure that the bike is the right for its primary use. Bicycle fit for commuting versus long touring rides versus racing are all different. A good bike mechanic can make sure that the bike dimensions fit the rider and the use."
"Bikes that don't fit can contribute to knee problems, neck pain, and other issues that then lead to the rider needing a different kind of mechanic, one like me," says Durham in his role as physical therapist.
He suggests following these simple steps to prevent injuries and improve the cycling experience.
