New Book Unleashes the Superhero in Kids with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism

"Superflex: A Superhero Social Thinking Curriculum" provides educators and parents with fun and motivating ways to teach elementary school students with Asperger Syndrome and high-functioning autism how to build social skills. The book, authored by speech-language pathologists Stephanie Madrigal and Michelle Garcia Winner, is the seventh book in a series on autism spectrum disorders. The book will be available on April 2, which the United Nations has declared World Autism Awareness Day.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) March 31, 2008 -- A new book, "Superflex: A Superhero Social Thinking Curriculum," provides educators and parents with fun and motivating ways to teach elementary school students with Asperger Syndrome and high-functioning autism how to build social skills. Developed by Stephanie Madrigal and Michelle Garcia Winner, "Superflex" combines a book, comic book and CD to create a curriculum that develops in the students' brains a superhero who overcomes the social thinking challenges that arise in different social contexts.

"`Superflex' is absolutely brilliant. My students are thoroughly enjoying the process of exploring their own world through the events and discussions we have had regarding `Social Town' and the `Team of Unthinkables.' From the very first therapy session I introduced `Superflex,' my students related to the characters and were able to openly and honestly discuss their own `Team of Unthinkables' in an extremely nonthreatening and meaningful manner," said Ann S. Meuel, a speech-language pathologist in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Betty R. Stockton, behavior intervention consultant, Arkansas Department of Education, Division of Special Education, stated, "Visiting a foreign country is full of challenges for the person who does not speak the language or know the customs. The hurdle is much the same everyday for persons who have social thinking problems, such as those with Asperger's Syndrome. The teacher, parent or other provider can find in `Superflex' a vehicle for explaining those invisible thoughts that `get in the way of getting along.'"

"Superflex" will be available for purchase at www.socialthinking.com on April 2, which the United Nations has declared World Autism Awareness Day.

Seventh Book by Michelle Garcia Winner on Autism Spectrum Disorders

"Superflex" is Winner's seventh book on ASD, and the second in the last six months. Winner recently released an updated, second edition of "Thinking About You, Thinking About Me," which provides instruction for parents, educators and service providers on how to develop in children and adults with ASD the ability to consider the perspectives of others, a capacity that is crucial to the development of advanced social skills.

"From Michelle's detailed explanations and case examples, to the oh-so practical strategies and worksheets and ready-to- use individualized education plan goals, `Thinking About You, Thinking About Me' covers it all. I can't recommend it enough," said Sue Carpenter, a special education teacher and parent of a daughter with social-cognitive learning challenges.

Winner's other books, which also offer curricula for parents, educators and service providers working with people with ASD, include: "Sticker Strategies to Encourage Social Thinking and Organization," "Social Behavior Mapping: Connecting Behavior, Emotions and Consequences Across the Day" and "Worksheets! for Teaching Social Thinking and Related Skills." All books can be purchased at www.socialthinking.com.
