Small Business in Orlando Sends Humanitarian Shipments to Africa

Amber Diagnostics, a small company that remanufactures diagnostic radiology equipment, has undertaken a program of including humanitarian donations in every container shipped to the company's satellite office in Cameroon, Africa. The donation effort is entirely grassroots and intiated and executed by the company and its employees. Donations are delivered directly to those in need by Amber Diagnostics employees.

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) December 19, 2008 -- Entrepreneur Bobby Serros knew that opening an affiliate office in Cameroon, Africa would present a number of challenges: language and cultural differences, bureaucracy to navigate, and logistical issues. He did not know, however, that his business operations in Africa would lead him to create an internal charity program that has taken on a life of its own.

Serros is the founder/president/CEO of Amber Diagnostics (http://www.amberusa.com), a leading distributor and refurbisher of medical imaging equipment. In 15 years, he has built his business from two employees to nearly 100 employees worldwide, with total annual sales expected to reach $50 million by 2010.

Serros opened Amber Diagnostics AFRICA in Douala, Cameroon in 2004 and discovered that there was an opportunity to integrate charitable donations into the regular shipments from the United States to his operation in Africa.

"Amber Diagnostics ships ten 40-foot containers per year to Cameroon. When we loaded our first container for Africa we realized there was additional space for miscellaneous items," said Serros. "What started out on a small scale - providing items like bibles, beds and clothes to fill space in the containers - has grown and is now standard protocol for Amber Diagnostics and our employees."

In the ensuing years, the donations have grown to include medical equipment such as incubators and fetal monitoring devices, and have an estimated value of $100,000 thus far. Serros also has added a page (http://www.amberusa.com/donations_africa.asp) to the Amber Diagnostics Web site with information about how any person or group can have their donations included in the company's regular shipments to Africa. Needed items include clothing, shoes, books, electronics, school supplies, camping gear, mosquito nets, tarps, eye glasses, and tools.

"Our operations in Cameroon have been very successful and the donations we send are our way of giving back to the community in Douala," Serros said. "And it's comforting to know that the donations we send are actually getting to the people who need them because Amber employees personally deliver these items to churches, schools and hospitals. There are no middlemen or government bureaucracies to interfere with or delay deliveries."

Serros adds that all Amber employees and managers share in making the donations happen. "Our company's mission statement has always been to provide the highest quality radiology and diagnostic equipment with the intention of saving a life every day," he said. "Now, we're taking it a step further by providing essential donations that go directly to those in need."
