Colleagues and Peers Across the United States and Europe Gathered to Learn About New Mesh Implant Arthroplasty in the Treatment of Basilar Joint Arthritis Houston, TX (PRWEB) July 24, 2008 -- One of the leading orthopedic surgeons in his field, hand specialist Dr. Evan Collins was asked to present findings from his newest research study, Mesh Implant Arthroplasty in the Treatment of Basilar Joint Arthritis, at the 2008 Eurohand Congress held in Lausanne, Switzerland mid June.
Researchers and physicians from around the world gathered to hear the latest advances in the field of orthopedics for the hand and upper extremity.
Dr. Collins, who began the study in 2006 in an effort to find a more effective treatment for osteoarthritis of the thumb - one of the most common forms of arthritis affecting his patients, utilized a new biodegradable polycaprolactone mesh T-shaped spacer in a small group of patients suffering from OA limited to the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb.
The patients who underwent the procedure were previously nonresponsive to conservative treatment.
"The CMC joint of the thumb is a particularly vulnerable joint in the hand, because of the range of motion it is able to achieve and its frequency of use - from everyday activities and sports, to strenuous projects and home repairs. For this reason, it is likely to be subjected to stress or injury, which over the course of time often leads to osteoarthritis," said Dr. Collins.
"This study is exciting because the implant used is less invasive and "biophysically friendly" to the small bones of the hand and the thumb joint. Results have been positive," he added.
Dr. Collins is well-known among athletes and musicians alike as an innovator in the field of hand and upper extremity injuries and conditions. From distal radius fractures sustained during a tackle to overuse and repetitive stress conditions resulting from repeated performances, his advanced research and less invasive approach has lead to more rapid recoveries and sustained health - critical to the career of many of his patients.
Dr. Collins is part of the Methodist orthopedic team serving as the official healthcare provider of the Houston Texans and Houston Dynamo. He is also a member of the Center for Performing Arts Medicine (CPAM) and featured among H Texas Magazine's Super Docs. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSJ), the American Medical Association, the Texas Society of Sports Medicine, the Texas Orthopaedic Association, and the Houston Orthopaedic Society.
