Dermatologists Agree They Need More Training to Boost Aesthetic Laser Procedures

Manufacturers have opportunity to increase adoption of aesthetic laser procedures by providing more training to physicians, according to Millennium Research Group.

Waltham, MA (PRWEB) March 23, 2007 -- Millennium Research Group (MRG) conducted a detailed survey covering aesthetic lasers during the recent American Academy of Dermatology conference. Results of this study are analyzed in the company's US Dermatologist Survey: Aesthetic Laser Procedure and Product Trends 2007 report. The information collected at the February conference concluded that lack of training was the number one factor preventing maximized use of aesthetic laser procedures such as skin rejuvenation, tightening, and resurfacing. Close to 40% of dermatologists agreed that they need additional training to perform more types of aesthetic laser procedures.

"Purchase decision factors were also investigated and we found that overall, efficacy of the laser was rated as the most important factor when deciding which brand to purchase," says Leonard Machler, Analyst at MRG. "Both physicians from hospitals and solo practices felt this way."

MRG's US Dermatologist Survey: Aesthetic Laser Procedure and Product Trends 2007 report examines the industry's fastest growing procedures, which include skin rejuvenation, skin tightening, and skin resurfacing.

About Aesthetic Laser Procedures

  • Skin rejuvenation includes wrinkle reduction and pigment lesion removal procedures. In a wrinkle reduction procedure, laser skin rejuvenation reverses the wrinkling process by stimulating collagen production, which thickens the dermis and raises depressed areas. In a pigment lesion removal procedure, lasers remove pigment lesions through photothermolysis and energy heats the surrounding tissue, fracturing the melanin.

  • Skin tightening is used to perform less invasive face-lifts and brow-lifts as well as tightening of redundant skin on the neck, arms, and abdomen.

  • Skin resurfacing includes all ablative techniques that remove the surface layers of the epidermis. After skin resurfacing is performed, the body's healing process generates a new even-toned, youthful epidermis.
