DigitalSports® Honors High School Scholar-Athlete-Citizens with Coveted Scholarship Prizes

National sports network grants tuition awards to 34 student-athlete role models across the U.S.

Columbia, Md. (PRWEB) August 6, 2008 -- U.S. high school students around the country are winning much-needed college tuition money for their sports-related accomplishments. DigitalSports®, a national network of local sport communities, connecting athletes, coaches, fans and families, announced today it granted 34 students across the country with one of its two annual tuition scholarships. The DigitalSports "Applause" and "Media" Scholarships are awarded annually to senior-level high school students who excel not only on the athletic field, but in the classroom and in the community, while facing and overcoming extraordinary adversity.

In 2008, DigitalSports granted over $30,000 in scholarships to exceptional young women and men from the beaches of Hawaii to the shores of New Jersey. The stories of each of these students are not only heart-warming, but often heart-wrenching. Unlike many sports-related awards, DigitalSports scholarships are not necessarily granted to the best athlete, but rather to the best student-athlete role model. This years winners are from the follwing areas: Richmond, VA; Baltimore, MD; Honolulu, HI; Ocean and Monmouth Counties in NJ; Fairfax, VA; Arlington, VA and Washington, DC. Next year, as the sports network grows and more students are nominated for the awards, the scholarship money is expected to double.

"The students honored with this year's Applause and Media Scholarships are the young adults who will be courageously leading us into the future," says Carl Wartzack, Chief Operating Officer of DigitalSports. "We are thrilled to shine a spotlight on extraordinary students throughout the country who set examples and give so much of themselves to others, and to offer them this tuition-award in order to further their education."

The Applause Award is granted to student-athletes in DigitalSports communities who have displayed a commitment to their local community and their sport while overcoming extraordinary challenges--from financial setbacks to hurricanes to severe illness. This scholarship-award is granted to nominated boys and girls participating in all of the three sports seasons--fall, winter and spring.

The Media Award recognizes young sports journalists-in-the-making--students who have contributed the highest quality content on the most consistent basis to their local DigitalSports.com community website. This award is presented to one high school student in each participating athletic conference based on the timeliness, originality and accuracy of reporting and content contribution on their school's local DigitalSports web site.

DigitalSports.com was established to highlight the positive aspects of high school and youth sports and the positive impact sports has on the individual and their community. The goal of the DigitalSports network is to support the influence sports has on young-athletes by offering information, tools, services and tuition-awards to students across the country.

DigitalSports believes in helping students and student-athletes develop valuable skills, experiences and attributes that will be needed to advance their careers and solidify life-long success. In addition to tuition-based scholarships (Applause and Media Awards), DigitalSports also offers internships. Through the DigitalSports Developmental League, students can learn new skills by actually performing the tasks associated with a particular career that is of interest to them.

DigitalSports has quickly become the premier source for local sports multimedia, including videos, photos, headlines, stats, standings and other information, and is widely recognized as the go-to resource for coaches, municipalities and officials with its suite of innovative management tools and systems.
