Denver Plastic Surgeon Warns Against Medical Tourism

Aging Boomer Population Spurs Growth of Industry Fraught With Dangers

Denver, CO (PRWEB) August 13, 2007 -- With 300,000 Americans expected to fly to a foreign country for a medical procedure this year - more than double last year's numbers - the burgeoning industry of medical tourism is on the rise. Patients are often drawn to exotic locations like Southeast Asia, Mexico and Costa Rica for surgery at bargain-basement prices. And the procedure most in-demand in these and other tourist-oriented locations is cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Stephen Goldstein, a board-certified plastic surgeon with Denver Face and Body, urges consumers considering cosmetic surgery in Colorado to think twice before they look to a tropical location for breast enhancement, liposuction, Botox injections, laser skin resurfacing and other types of plastic surgery.

Avoiding vacation-related activities following any cosmetic procedure are also recommended by Dr. Goldstein. Sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, water or jet skiing, parasailing, consuming alcohol - even extensive walking - can increase the risk of complications and lead to infections, swelling, scars and hemotomas. In addition, taken individually, air travel and surgery can increase the risk of developing pulmonary embolism and blood clots. Combining these increases a patient's risk of developing potentially fatal complications.

Dr. Goldstein also warns that sterilization techniques, facility certifications, surgeon and medical personnel qualifications, and cosmetic surgery devices and products used in other countries may not meet U.S. standards. Add in those costs and you'll find saving on plastic surgery in a foreign country can be no bargain, said Dr. Goldstein.

A board certified Denver plastic surgeon, Dr. Goldstein has over 20 years of experience in Denver plastic surgery. He also trains and lectures other surgeons nationally and internationally on procedures he has mastered.
